Kid's art, all grown up

Copyright, The Monster Engine, Dave DeVries The Monster Engine is a book, a demonstration/lecture and a gallery exhibition. The idea for this project came to illustrator Dave DeVries when he posed the question: What would a child's drawing look life if it were painted realistically?

I love this idea. As an artist, I've always been fascinated with how a children see the world and try to convey it in their artwork. I have a few young second-cousins and I've saved every drawing they've ever made for me. It's fun trying to make sense of the disproportioned figures their imagination comes up with. Which is exactly what makes The Monster Engine so fun.

So check out the art, watch the electronic press kit video, and buy the book. I plan to. Well, after I dig up some of my own childhood drawings and give them a realistic facelift.

Didn't you post this a while back? Anyhoo, thanks for getting my eyes back on this stuff. Really interesting results.

I found this link a while ago, but didn't get around to linking it until now.

Interestingly, I just realized - this artist went to my college, Syracuse University. And he teaches there 5 weeks out of the year. Maybe I'll go visit my alma mater and sit in on a class or something.

What a cool book. I'm particularly intrigued because the project is very similar to something I do myself, except using my own childhood drawings. Yes, I'm so uncreative these days that I need to steal ideas from my childhood self to come up with anything interesting!
