The Web LogGoatee Style

This is not a redesign
Saturday, January 21, 2006

Do not panic. Do not attempt to adjust your monitor. Things have changed a little, but no, this isn't a redesign. Here's the situation...

Several weeks ago I switched web hosts, which rendered my old blogging scripts kaput. I use Movable Type, in case you wondered. Since I needed to reconfigure everything anyway, I figured I'd just install the latest version of MT.

I won't bore you with the technical details. But basically, my old templates didn't jive with the new MT setup. So I spent a day or two trying to shove new bits of code into the gaps. By the way, did you realize that the Goatee Style design you've come to recognize was about six years old? That's ancient in web years.

I tried to "MacGyver" my sloppy web code with duct tape, paper clips, and a gum wrapper... but I soon realized it wasn't worth it. What I was trying to do was comparable to putting a band-aid on the hole in the Titanic. I was fighting a losing battle. So I just let it sink.

I'll never let go, Jack While my old site takes on a new role as an artificial coral reef, I've decided to work on this new ship you see before you. It may be only a row boat, but at least it's seaworthy. (Are these boat analogies getting old yet? Yeah, I thought so).

So why am I stressing that this isn't a "redesign"? Because... while I'm satisfied with this layout for now... this is not the grand vision I have in mind. Ooh, you don't even know what I have planned for the future of Goatee Style! I can't say when these monumental changes might take place. Could be next week. Could be next year. But... oh boy... um... I've already said too much.

Until I get the full site back in order, I hope you aren't left yearning for the now missing sections. Were you honestly still watching my cam? Did you regularly look through the sticker photos? Did you like reading my comics from the late 90's? If so, you're weird. That stuff had long since fossilized! But don't worry, all that old stuff will eventually be returned to the site with a fresh coat of wax.

But for now, keep checking this space for new web log entries. I'm sure 2006 will bring plenty of drama, joy, anguish and rapture. And all of it will be recounted here, with the typical wit you'd expect from a guy who would name his website "Goatee Style."

I can feel the cosmos too! It's furry. No wait, that's not the cosmos. Nevermind.

Yeay! Life! You're "non-redesign" is "smoking". Your redesign, if this is any indication, should be "FIRE"! (I heard some people on tv use this language.) GO RYAN!

Good to have you back, man.

I had that same problem with MT... so I just moved to WordPress. I love it.

I feel like Tom Hanks in Castaway. And now that I've left the island, shaved my beard, and parted ways with Wilson the volleyball, everyone is welcoming me back. Let's have a party... I AM back!

Good luck on the layout, Ryn. I've been a long-time reader of your blog.

I'm in the midst of re-designing my website as well. But in a format completely new to me, some dread it some embrace it. You may know it as flash.

Hope for the best, for you to get your site back and running!

The Goatee Style I knew and loved is gone.

I'm still with you, I'll wait for the next version.

Oh man, I was going to post my favorite pic of you, but you aren't allowing images...

Very nicely done, I must say. But with the move to Movable Type, I was also hoping for the availability of an RSS feed somewhere along the line. Any plans on that front? Long live the Goat!
