Night of the Living Scarecrow
Monday, October 31, 2005

Imagine you're a trick-or-treater walking up to a house on Halloween night. You see a scarecrow standing motionless in the bushes, with its arms spread. It almost looks real, so you take a few steps forward to get a closer look. And suddently its long fingers curl, its head slowly turns, and the entire monster jumps out at you.

I think this is my favorite costume yet. I call this one the "Patch Master." He is the guardian of the Zombie Pumpkins. A twisted scarecrow with a pumpkin face and insides of vine and straw.

I'm really happy with how all the parts came together. The long coat and shredded t-shirts came from the thift store. The floppy brown hat was found online. So were the gangly black gloves, which I modified with two kinds of green fabric paint to make them resemble vines. Wrist bands and a neck collar of straw were attached with velcro. The tan hood was generously supplied by my mother, who's been suckered into sewing parts for these costumes since 1978.

And the mask, I'm proud to say, was sculpted and painted by me. The jaw was even hinged, to allow me to open and close my mouth. Some people said, "Cool mask. I've never seen that one in stores." I know. Because I MADE it!

Apparently the effect of me lurking around in the shadows was pretty creepy. People were afraid to come near me. A couple girls dared each other to hug me. They hesitantly approached and got a friendly hug. But as soon as they turned their backs to leave, I chased them down the street screaming.

I got a few handshakes and high-fives, posed for some photos (and a video), and made at least 3 little kids cry. I'd say that's the sign of a successful Halloween costume.

Now that's one awesome costume!

The only way to top it is to become one of your Zombie Pumpkins.

Ryn, you seriously need to come out here to Buena Park, California next year and be a monster at the world's best Halloween attraction (we've got the Golden Ticket industry award to prove it!), Knott's Scary Farm next year! That bit is SO worthy of what one of our monsters would have done! And reading about the fate of the girls who posed for the pics - you've got the heart and soul of a true monster! That's exactly what I would have done (And actually, frequently did do! People just don't expect you to turn on them once they've posed for a picture with you... Strange... Some unspoken social contract - in their minds - where by allowing your image to be captured with them means there some comeraderie and thus you won't scare them... Hmmm...).
Huzzah my friend, and glad to hear you had a VERY successful haunt! (Seriously, that costume is bad-ass, and certainly the best I've seen on ya! Well Done!)

BTW - Odd how your costumes often wind up being pumpkin stencils on ZP... (See Mad Scientist stencil)

I didn't read your post before posting mine BWG - as I say, he DID become one of his Zombie Pumpkins... Or rather, the other way around... Didn't you see the Patch Master stencil? Uncanny that...

Thanks for the compliments. That means a lot coming from a hardcore haunter like you, Fireball.

Ya know... I've done some crazy costumes before, but none where I was this much in disguise. I guess this was the creepiest yet (and even more so at night, as opposed to these daytime photos I took in the corn field).

My initial plan wasn't necessarily to scare people or chase them around screaming. But that's what happened, and I just ran with it. I really got into character and it was a lot of fun.

If I can drag myself away from my duties over at ZombiePumpkins.com, I might try to participate in some attraction somewhere next season. Based on my experience this Halloween, it seems like you haunt actors have all the fun!

Oh, and yes... my last pumpkin carving stencil each season is usually based on my Halloween costume. This tradition goes back several years... from the evil clown costume, to the Jack Sparrow costume, to the Rob Zombie costume.

I just got the "creepy chills" from looking at those pictures of you in your costume. I thank the lord that I didn't run into you in public. I'd have had a stroke...or maybe run away screaming and then tripped over nothing [my own feet] and been paralyzed with fear laying in the street waiting for the killer [you] to come finish me off...like in the movies. Well done!

Nice, it got a kind of Stephen King-ish feel to it. Very cool. And a bit gruesome...

But (there always have to be at least one butt...erm...but) you look goatee-less on these photos.

Hej! (Swedish)

Awesome! Fantastic job on the costume as always man! I did something similar one year, not nearly as elaborate, i just wore some old clothes and stuffed newspaper up the sleves and in the mask so it looked like i was a dummy made of old crap and newspaper and i sat on the porch and waited for trick'r'treaters to come in close and think i was a decoration and then i'd jump and scare the sheeite out of them... I saw many tears that night. good times.

Hello, fellow Halloween lovers! ;)

I happened upon your site last year, and I am so glad I did! I was looking for some great pumpkin carving designs, and I was thrilled to find some of my favorite monsters and movie characters. I printed out The Nightmare Before Christmas ones, and also Patch Master, as I love scarecrows. I saw the pic of you as Patch Master with your jack-o-lantern and thought, "Now THAT is bad-ass!!!" hehe I'd love to try to make a mask like that for a scarecrow I made. Care to share your secrets?? :)

If I may make a suggestion for a new design, what about making some of the characters from Interview with the Vampire?? (My fave film!) Just an idea!

Keep up the great work! I'll be using your designs again next year!!

Tisha, from California

For further info about how I put together this costume, you should check out this forum post. Speaking of the "Freaky Forum" you should post some of these comments over there, where you'll get some replies from other Halloweeen freaks.
